OXFORD LANCERS 14-0 ARU RHInos
Oxford Lancers vs. Anglia Ruskin University Rhinos
Due to scheduling issues, the Oxford Lancers had to make an early start to get to Cambridge for a 10:30 kickoff. Tired, but determined and resolute, Oxford arrived with slight delay, ready to kickoff at 11.
The Lancers were their own worst enemy in the first drives: allowing a 30 yd Kickoff Return on the first play, turning the ball over with an early INT, and getting penalised for holding calls and an ineligible receiver downfield. Unfortunately, it called back a 30 yard catch and run by TE Alex Dale in the seam. Special mentions goes to rookie RB Connor Thompson, who ripped off 14 and 24 yard runs on the first drive behind the strong downfield blocking of the O-line, and the deep ball connection between QB Will Szymanski and WR Ahmad Nasir, who terrorised the ARU secondary all morning.
Fortunately, our defense held firm, holding ARU to 0 points in the first half, and making sure to get the offense the ball after continual turnovers on downs. Still, ARU are a tough opponent, so the match was at a stalemate at HT.
In the second half, the Oxford Lancers settled into their groove and started dominating both sides of the ball. The offense came out like gangbusters after the KR, with star rookie RB Connor leading the charge with a shifty 50 yard run. A few plays later, Connor punched the ball in for the Lancer TD. The offense were also able to score on a 2-pt conversion, with a bullet from QB Will Szymanski to TE Alex Dale in the endzone.
The Lancers dominated on defense as well, able to get the ball from the opposing QB on two second half interceptions. The first was by LB Benedict Shilito, and the second was by Alex Dale, who was the safety on that play, and he took it to the house for six and the second Lancer TD. After the failed conversion and the resulting kickoff, the game was all but over, giving the Lancers their first win of the season!
