OXFORD LANCERS 1-0 UWE BULLETS
The Lancers were set to open their season and have their first test in Division 1 against the UWE Bullets, however, due to an administrative error the Bullets were forced to take a forfeit.
The teams decided to have a controlled scrimmage to get some needed practice in and the Lancers took the opportunity to get all of their players some game time.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Lancers showed a taste of things to come this season. The defensive front did a great job shutting down the Bullets running attack and the defensive backs kept the Bullets passing attack in check. A few notables stats from the defense were: 2 sacks by Rob Main, forced fumbles by Jonny Brooks and Alex Mindell, and tackles for losses by multiple players, including Jonny Brooks, Matt Williamson, Oscar Rahnama, and Chris Nowek.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Lancers showed some promise as well. They matched the Bullets in total yards and QB Will Szymanski spread the ball around to all of his receivers. The highlight of the day was when Szymanski hooked up with rookie receiver Machmud Makhmudov for the Lancers first trip to the endzone this season.
The Lancers also had the opportunity to meet with alumnus Jason Briggs. Jason played in the inaugural season of the Oxford American Football Club (91-92) and it was great to reconnect with a former player to share past glories.
The Lancers will now take their 1-0 record and begin the prep for next week's game against the Exeter Demons.
